Couple Finds $6,500 Worth Of Jewelry In A $6 Chair They Bought At Auction
Digging beneath a seat cushion can usually get you a handful of spare change—if you’re lucky. So it’s hard to imagine the surprise Angus Milner-Brown of Scotland must have experienced when he uncovered a set of diamond jewelry in a chair.
Angus, who works for international auction house Sotheby’s, did what any resourceful husband would do and held onto the jewels to present to his wife on a special occasion.
“A few years back my husband surprised me with a diamond ring for our wedding anniversary,” Angela Milner-Brown told the Telegraph. “The following Valentine’s Day, he gave me a pair of diamond earrings and then a diamond broach at Easter.”
Last week, the couple had the jewelry appraised during filming of an episode of BBC’sAntiques Roadshow. Angela said the experts were just as astonished as they were. The jewelry—a diamond ring, diamond brooch, and a pair of diamond earrings—along with the chair were valued altogether at £5,000 or about $6,500.
“It was an amazing, wonderful discovery for us,” said Angela. “You just never know what you’ll find in an old piece of furniture, I suppose.”
The couple purchased the antique chair at auction 10 years ago for a bargain price of—wait for it—£5, or approximately $6.50. They couldn’t afford to have it reupholstered immediately, so it sat in the attic for several years. It wasn’t until they got around to having it refinished that Angus, while removing some of the cushioning, found the jewels.
“There were about three or four layers that he had to rip off, and that was when he found the jewelry hidden under the final layer of material,” said Angela.
“My husband is very romantic so he decided to keep the items secret and surprise me with them. It was a really lovely thing to do,” she added.
